Chip Talk > EU's Big Bet on Smart Factory Connectivity: An Inside Look at SPRINTER Project
Published April 28, 2025
In a bold move to revolutionize the factory environments of the future, the European Union has poured €6 million into the SPRINTER project. This initiative aims to set the stage for ultra-connected smart factories, under the Horizon project, coordinated by the Photonics Partnership. The goal is to replace outdated copper wiring and unreliable Wi-Fi connections with state-of-the-art optical and mmWave technology.
The heart of this endeavor lies in developing robust optical transceivers capable of supporting a hefty data throughput of 200 Gb/s. To achieve this, the project will harness InP-EML arrays, GaAs-VCSEL arrays, and InP-PD arrays as key components for cost-effective, energy-efficient transceivers.
By the time the project reaches fruition, it's expected to support Industry 5.0’s demand for faster, smarter, and more stable networks. Pioneering this mission is the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) from Athens, working alongside European partners like Fraunhofer and IMEC, as well as global industry players such as Ericsson and Mellanox Technologies.
To combat common factory floor issues such as dust and interference, the SPRINTER project will integrate a hybrid photonic platform, allowing seamless transition between light and mmWave signals. This setup ensures uninterrupted connection, critical for maintaining automated systems without delays, as noted by Compound Semiconductor.
This project is set to make Europe a leader in industrial photonics, facilitating the advancement of automation and intelligent systems—an essential development as factories worldwide gear up for the next industrial wave.
Rating: 8: This initiative is crucial for semiconductor IP professionals focusing on industrial and communication systems, heralding a new era in factory connectivity.
