Chip Talk > India's New Electronics Scheme: A Boost for Semiconductor Manufacturing
Published April 27, 2025
India has just announced a new set of guidelines designed to elevate its electronics parts manufacturing capabilities, a move that could deliver significant opportunities for semiconductor IP professionals in the country. As detailed in the Economic Times, the initiative focuses on attracting Rs 59,350 crore ($8 billion) in new investments, creating 91,600 direct jobs, and enabling production worth Rs 4,56,500 crore ($61 billion).
Key to this plan is the emphasis on companies with local design teams and adherence to 'six sigma' quality levels, suggesting a push towards not just increased production, but enhanced quality and innovation within the electronics manufacturing sector. This could present a fertile landscape for semiconductor IP development and collaboration.
Union electronics and information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw outlines that these efforts will likely catapult India to a formidable position in the global electronics market, fostering an ecosystem conducive to innovation and higher-value outputs.
For semiconductor IP professionals, this move could signify greater demand for locally sourced technologies and expertise in high-quality design and manufacturing processes. Moreover, the scheme’s emphasis on local design could stimulate the creation and sharing of indigenous IP, potentially leading to a vibrant domestic IP market.
