Chip Talk > UMC Navigates Tariff Turbulence While Expanding Chip Capacity
Published April 24, 2025
United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) is forecasting growth in its chip wafer shipments despite the looming shadow of U.S. tariffs. The company expects a 7% increase in shipments this quarter, accompanied by an increase in factory utilization rates. This optimistic outlook comes even as the tariff policies under U.S. administration create an uncertain business environment.
To mitigate these challenges, UMC is accelerating its U.S. capacity expansion in collaboration with Intel Corp, targeting a ramp-up in 12-nanometer chip production by 2027. This move not only strengthens UMC’s foothold in North America but also aligns with rising reshoring interest amidst global trade tensions.
